My Daughter's Keeper
An Interactive Journal for Black Mothers & Their Daughters
You know your daughter. But do you know what it's like to be mothered by you?
My Daughter's Keeper was created to help Black mothers and daughters have the conversations that don't always happen naturally... you know, the honest ones about who you are, what you've experienced, what you need from one another, what has been passed down through your family, and what you want to carry forward differently.
This isn't a journal you buy for your daughter and tell her to complete.
You do this together.
Throughout more than 300 pages, both Mother and Daughter are given space to answer, reflect, ask questions, tell stories, share experiences, and learn things about one another that may never come up in everyday conversation.
And sometimes, the questions go there.
Daughter: What is a personal boundary that I've crossed that you may not have been aware of?
Mother: What personal boundaries were put in place to increase your autonomy? If your boundaries weren't respected, what are you doing differently to break that cycle?
Daughter: Tell me about a time when you felt like I betrayed your trust.
Mother: When thinking about your own childhood, when was a time that you felt like your mother betrayed your trust?
Because understanding your daughter also requires understanding yourself: the girl you were, the mother you've become, what you inherited, and what your daughter is experiencing in relationship with you.
More Than Journal Prompts
My Daughter's Keeper is designed to become a living record of your relationship.
Together, you'll explore:
-
emotional and relational safety
-
trust, vulnerability, resentment, boundaries, and repair
-
your family's history through a multigenerational family tree and genogram
-
Mom's pregnancy, birth, and motherhood story
-
Black girlhood and Black womanhood
-
colorism, identity, social experiences, and the Strong Black Woman narrative
-
relationships and friendships
-
grief and loss
-
praise and gratitude
-
grievances and complaints
-
hopes, dreams, and your vision for the future
There are also lighter experiences throughout the journal, including questions, preferences, Black culture trivia, photographs, family memories, and creative activities.... because every meaningful conversation doesn't have to begin with the hard stuff.
You Can Be Close and Still Have More to Learn About Each Other.
Maybe you and your daughter are already close. You talk every day, she tells you damn near everything, and you want to protect that closeness as she grows. That doesn't mean there isn't more for you to learn about each other.
Because as she grows, she's becoming someone you've never met before... and motherhood is changing you, too.
Maybe you're beginning to realize that you don't know everything she's thinking anymore. Maybe your relationship with your own mother taught you exactly what you want to do differently. Or maybe there are conversations you know you need to have, but neither of you knows quite how to begin.
And if your relationship is going through a difficult season, there's room for that here, too.
My Daughter's Keeper gives you both the space to stay curious about who you're becoming, individually and together, and to create something many of us wish we'd had:
A safe place for your daughter to know her mother as a woman, and for you to truly know the girl... and eventually the young woman... she's becoming.
A Journal Designed to Grow With Her
My Daughter's Keeper isn't meant to be completed over a weekend.
Start slowly.
Learn one another.
Laugh.
Write.
Add photographs.
Ask questions.
Have conversations.
Take breaks when you need them.
Come back when you're ready.
The journal was designed to grow alongside your daughter and your relationship, beginning around age 12 and continuing through adolescence and into her transition toward young adulthood.
As she grows, the conversations will grow too.
And One Day, This Becomes Something Else.
Years from now, these pages won't just contain prompts.
They'll hold her handwriting.
Your handwriting.
Her thoughts about being a Black girl at this moment in her life.
Your memories of carrying her before she was born.
Stories about the people who came before both of you.
Things she needed you to know.
Things you finally found the words to tell her.
The relationship you had.
And the relationship you intentionally chose to build.
You're not simply filling out a journal. You're documenting a relationship, and creating something that can outlive the season you're currently in.
